Flexible SchedulingOur Philosophy here at Wheatland is to use flexible scheduling in conjunction with resource-based teaching, book checkout, and computer usage. Lessons are scheduled when the classroom teacher and/or the LMC Director indicate a curricular need. Students do not come to the LMC an a regularly scheduled basis for instruction. Scheduling is done when teachers find their curriculum dictates usage. During a scheduled monthly "LMC and Grade Level" planning meeting, the LMC director and grade level team will schedule and develop lessons. At this time discussion of support materials for the coming month will also be considered. Teachers may also meet informally with the LMC director to plan lessons. The district language arts curriculum and district technology curriculum will dictate the basic goals and objectives to be reached, but teacher, classroom, LMC, subject area, or student goals will be considered and incorporated as well. Areas of concern and discussion during the scheduled monthly meetings include: information literacy skills, research assignments, literature support, curriculum support, publishing, computer skills, reading incentives, programs, literature appreciation activities, etc. Resource-Based TeachingResource-based teaching is an application of cooperative teaching between the LMC Director and the classroom teacher. The purpose of resource-based teaching is to integrate library and information skills as well as literature appreciation activities into the classroom curriculum. "Library" is not a separate subject area and will not be treated as such. The library supports the curriculum. Information Literacy skills become more meaningful for students when related to a unit of study with immediate application. Instruction in the LMC is presented using a team approach, classroom teacher and LMC staff, whenever feasible. Individuals and small groups are always welcome in the library.
