SpellingSpelling will be taught within the context of Reading and Writing. It will be taught systematically through word lists of useful, patterned, and developmentally appropriate words derived from familiar text. It will also be taught functionally through proofreading experiences with writing that is authentic and meaningful. Spelling is an integral part of the writing process and an essential part of the students' total experience with language. By writing and receiving feedback, students learn to spell. Spelling is not a matter of memorizing words. Spelling involves forming and revising concepts about the written language. Students will learn to use strategies that reflect their developmental stages. The teaching of Spelling is supported by an integrated curriculum that provides continuous reinforcement, strategies for proofreading, and high frequency words to produce fluent, competent writers. Teachers in first grade use the McCracken Spelling method, and teachers at grades two through five use the spelling strategies that accompany the Macmillan series. |
