Reading

Reading aloud to children has been identified as one of the most influential elements in a child's learning to read. Reading aloud to students on a daily basis develops listening skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and positive attitudes about reading. Teachers will include a variety of genre and types of literature.

Each day students will spend time in self-directed independent reading. Reading experts tell us that periods of silent, independent reading are perhaps the strongest experiences we can provide students to demonstrate the value of literacy.

Directed reading instruction will be provided during shared reading experiences. Teachers will model and discuss strategies, vocabulary, and text. Teachers will guide students through the process of reading as students talk, think, and question their way through text together.
